Biography

Classical Guitarist Andrew Leonard has been called a “guitar phenomenon” by the Portland, Phoenix and his playing has been referred to as “spirited and convincing” in Soundboard Magazine and “inspiring…effortless style” in Northeast Performer.  

Andrew’s concert schedule has taken him throughout the country, from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine and to Europe.  As a young artist, at age 26, Andrew’s 1995 D.C area debut performance at Strathmore Hall was sold out, months in advance.  He spent the Millennium performing in Geneva, Switzerland.

Andrew has two solo recordings, A World of Guitar Music and Music of the Ages. His debut recording, Music of the Ages was featured as release of the month on WGTS radio in Maryland and both recordings have received airplay throughout the country on National Public Radio affiliates.  He is an endorsee for D’Addario strings and performs in a wardrobe provided by Jackson & Connor, a menswear shop in Northampton, MA.

Andrew Leonard also performed with grammy award winning acoustic fingerstyle guitarist, Doug Smith.  Since 2000, the genre defying Leonard and Smith Guitar Duo  performed in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings from concerts halls and music festivals to coffeehouses and house concerts in the wine country of Washington state and by the beach in Cape Cod, MA.

As an instructor, Andrew ran the guitar program at the University of Kentucky, taught at Wesleyan University and the National Guitar Workshop’s Classical Guitar Summit.  Online, Andrew teaches using skype and Zoom.  Andrew is the creator of several online guitar courses and The Classical Guitar Conservatory at TrueFire.com.  Andrew has also received Suzuki and Childbloom training to teach young children guitar.  He is a faculty member of the Northampton Community Music Center where he teaches Suzuki and Classical Guitar students.

In addition to performing and teaching guitar, Andrew enjoys sharing his experiences and knowledge of the music business.  He has given his lecture Creating A Career as a Performer at the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Festival and for guitar programs at Arizona State University and Yale University.  

While living in Kentucky Andrew was selected by the Kentucky Arts Council to become an arts consultant for the Kentucky Peer Advisory Network (KPAN).  As a consultant for the KPAN program Andrew mentored individual artists and arts organizations on everything from evaluating press materials to creating, marketing and running a concert series.

At age twelve, Andrew received his first guitar and a Led Zeppelin songbook. At age 16 Andrew began studying classical guitar. A year later, he received an award from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.  He received his Master of Music Degree from Yale University where he was the recipient of the Rosoff Award and was a Yale Club of New Haven Fellow.
